This large floor vase is Italian, dating to circa 1980, and is ceramic with a high gloss black ground overlaid with craquelure patterned bands in a warm sand and gold tone that follow the form of the vessel from base to flared rim. The pattern reads as animal stripe at a distance but resolves into something more abstract on closer inspection, the crackled surface of the applied bands giving the piece a textural depth that a printed or painted finish cannot replicate. The form itself is classical in its proportions, a full shouldered body tapering to a narrow foot with a gently flared neck, which grounds the surface decoration and stops it from reading as purely decorative. It works in a room that already has black in its palette, where the gold craquelure registers against dark joinery or stone rather than competing with softer surroundings.
