Circa 1880 to 1920 Chinese Travel Chest | Hand Woven Bamboo
Built for movement rather than display, this chest carries the quiet authority of an object made to travel, endure, and return.
Produced in China during the late Qing Dynasty to early Republican period, this chest is constructed entirely from thick bent bamboo ribs with tightly woven bamboo panels, a method used before Western timber carcass construction became common. The hand painted Chinese characters to the front and reverse function as ownership or merchant identification, typical of travel chests used by individuals, guilds, or trading houses moving goods by boat, cart, and early rail. Iron latch hardware and ring handles are utilitarian, not decorative, reinforcing its role as a working object rather than export ornament. Time has darkened the bamboo to a deep, even tone, the surface bearing the marks of distance, handling, and purpose, an object shaped by journey rather than interior fashion.
