Made in England during the William IV period, circa 1830, this substantial twin pedestal sideboard is constructed in richly figured flame mahogany veneer over a solid timber carcass with hand cut joinery throughout. Reeded pilasters frame each pedestal, with carved fan and tassel motifs to the doors, a sunburst rosette to the central drawer and an inverted breakfront backboard drawing on the classical architectural language of the period. Turned bun feet temper the considerable scale, while the symmetry, figured timber and depth of carving point to a confident cabinet maker working at the better end of the English trade. Nearly two centuries later, it still has the authority it was built to have. This is furniture that needs enough room to be understood properly, where its scale reads as intention rather than imposition.
