Circa 1980 Wicker Rattan Barrel Chair Commissioned in Thailand
Circa 1980 Wicker Rattan Barrel Chair Commissioned in Thailand
Commissioned in Thailand circa 1980 by a South African family living there for work, this substantial wicker and rattan barrel chair travelled with the family when they later emigrated to Australia. Dense woven rattan wraps the frame continuously from the enclosed base through the broad rolled arms and around the flared back, with circular arm terminals and a removable floral seat cushion completing the construction. The strength of the piece lies in its exceptional 107cm width and fully finished rear profile, allowing it to stand confidently away from a wall rather than functioning as peripheral conservatory furniture. Its enveloping form and honeyed surface give the chair a relaxed tropical atmosphere while the controlled symmetry and generous scale lend it genuine presence within a contemporary interior.
The final image visualises the existing cushion reupholstered in a vintage ivory and beige striped fabric currently held in stock, available through Harper Fredericks Designer Reworks for an additional fee.
