Italian Postmodern Side Table Circa 1980s Chrome, Glass and Black Marble
Italian furniture production of the 1980s generated some of the most formally adventurous small tables of the postwar period, with manufacturers treating chrome, glass and stone as a vocabulary for sculptural object making rather than conventional furniture design. This two tiered side table is characteristic of that output, with a central chrome column rising from a weighted black marble disc base and carrying two offset circular glass shelves supported by asymmetric swept chrome brackets with ball finial detailing. The composition is deliberately unbalanced in a way that reads as considered rather than accidental, the lower shelf bracket curling outward to create a visual counterweight to the upper tier. It sits naturally beside a lounge chair or at the end of a sofa in a room where the other objects have been chosen with the same level of attention.
