Mid Qing Dynasty Bronze Charcoal Iron | 18th to 19th Century
Mid Qing Dynasty Bronze Charcoal Iron | 18th to 19th Century
Bronze objects from the Qing period often carried both utility and presence and this charcoal iron is a clear example. The bowl form was designed to hold embers while the smooth underside was passed over silk to warm and finish the fabric. Age and use have shaped the surface into a rich dark patina that speaks to its long working life.
The vessel shows traditional Qing decorative motifs cast in repeating spirals and leaf forms with the original bronze walls thick and assured. The wooden handle is later in date yet suits the piece and allows it to function as a historical object rather than a fragile relic. Pieces like this sat in the background of textile workshops and court households and they now serve as compelling sculptural artefacts with cultural and material depth.
