Designed by Pepe Cortés in the early 1990s for Spanish manufacturer Amat, the Jamaica stool became an icon of European café and bar culture, developed for Javier Mariscal’s Bar Jamaica in Barcelona during a period when industrial materials defined contemporary hospitality interiors. The design combines a cast aluminium saddle seat with a chromed steel tripod frame and circular footrest, engineered for durability, movement and long sitting without visual heaviness. Its balance of ergonomic shaping and exposed structure reflects late twentieth century Spanish design at its most pragmatic and expressive, created for real environments rather than domestic ornament. Still reads exactly as intended: functional, social, and unmistakably architectural in presence without excess.
