Laminated Plywood Cube Pedestals Circa 1970s to 1980s Exposed Edge Ply Construction Ex UTS
Laminated plywood with exposed edge banding was a material statement that emerged from the 1970s interest in honest construction, where the layered cross section of the material became the surface rather than something to be concealed. These cube pedestals show that thinking clearly, the stacked ply edges running continuously across every face and creating a fine horizontal rhythm that reads differently depending on the light. They were sourced from the common areas of the University of Technology Sydney, where institutional procurement during this period often favoured locally made objects of considered material quality. They function as bedside tables, display plinths, stacking shelves, or side tables depending on orientation, and the open face allows each use to shift without modification.
