Pair of Italian Baroque Revival Side Tables Circa 1950s Gilt and Silvered Wood Glass Tops
These pedestal side tables are Italian, dating to the postwar period circa 1950s, produced in workshops that maintained the tradition of carved and gilded timber through the mid century while adapting classical Baroque forms to a domestic residential scale. The pedestal bases are carved with considerable density, acanthus scrolls, reeded pilaster panels, and diamond lattice detail resolving into a shaped platform base with bracket feet, the whole finished in a two tone gilt and silver leaf that has softened and thinned unevenly over time to reveal the timber beneath in places. That patina is not damage, it is the record of the piece, and the uneven light it catches across the surface is something no new gilding replicates. A glass top protects the gilded rim of each table without interrupting the base. They belong in a room that already has other objects with age and material presence, where the worn gilt reads as intention rather than neglect.
