Dating to circa 1945, this three seat pretzel lounge comprises three cane modules forming a continuous 191cm profile. It was purchased in the United States more than fifty years ago by an Australian couple working there, from a widower who had already owned it for more than thirty years, and later travelled back to Australia with them. The full three module span is the reason to buy it, repeating the looping pretzel frame across almost two metres in a way a single chair cannot. Low, open and visually rhythmic, it brings a strong modernist line to the room while the staining and tonal variation accumulated over decades give the cane a depth that new material cannot reproduce.

Harper Fredericks Designer Reworks takes selected vintage furniture and develops a considered alternative to the piece as found. We retain the original structure and character while making specific decisions around finish, materials and repair. Each Designer Rework is developed specifically for the individual vintage piece, within a defined selection of finishes and materials. The advertised price is for the piece as found, with pricing for a Designer Rework determined once the final direction and scope of the Rework has been established.

The cane can remain natural, with the frame cleaned and repaired while retaining the staining and tonal variation accumulated over decades. Alternatively, it can be refinished in gloss black with upholstery selected from a small curated collection of vintage deadstock fabrics.
