Dating to circa 1910, this large Chinese brass charger is densely engraved with a central courtly scene surrounded by dragons, phoenixes, cloud forms and four character medallions. The composition draws on traditional Chinese auspicious imagery, with the dragon and phoenix carrying associations of power, harmony and prosperity, while the extensive engraving turns almost the entire surface into narrative decoration. At 60 cm across, its scale gives the piece an architectural presence rarely found in smaller decorative brasswork, with the aged surface and extraordinary density of linework allowing it to operate as much as an artwork as an object.
