Kalmar Ceramic Vase Australia, Circa 1950s Pink Glaze, Relief Gilt and Enamel
Kalmar Ceramic Vase Australia, Circa 1950s Pink Glaze, Relief Gilt and Enamel
This footed vase is Australian, produced by Kalmar Ceramics in Melbourne, dating to the 1950s, and carries a dusky pink glaze ground with heavily applied relief decoration of grape clusters, vine leaves and tendrils, finished in turquoise enamel and gilt. Kalmar were among the most accomplished Australian ceramic producers of the postwar period, known for their richly decorated domestic ware that drew on European influences while developing a distinctly local sensibility in colour and form. The moulded relief work here is generous and confident, with the gold picking out the leaf and stem detail against the green and blue of the fruit. It sits naturally on a dressing table or bathroom shelf where the palette is already doing something considered rather than neutral.
