Originally an antique Chesterfield, this sofa was recovered in Hong Kong approximately forty years ago by an Australian family living and working there during the period, creating an unusual intersection between traditional English form and late twentieth century expatriate taste. The deep buttoning, rolled arms and sculpted serpentine front retain the character of the original frame while introducing a softer and more fluid silhouette than is typically associated with Chesterfield seating. The blue crushed velvet recovery reflects a more decorative approach to luxury that was increasingly embraced throughout Asia during the period, transforming what was once a formal piece into something distinctly more individual. This is the sort of sofa that tends to sit comfortably within interiors where provenance and personality carry equal weight. The curved front softens its considerable scale, while the shifting surface of the velvet gives the piece a quiet sense of movement as light changes throughout the day.
