Antique Nineteenth Century Saxony Spinning Wheel
Antique Nineteenth Century Saxony Spinning Wheel
A grounded domestic presence shaped by repetition, rhythm, and long use.
Dating to the mid to late nineteenth century, this traditional Saxony style spinning wheel reflects the working craft of British or Northern European textile households, later carried to Australia during the colonial period. Treadle operated and foot powered, it is built around a horizontal drive wheel with lathe turned legs, spindles, and flyer arms, assembled using period joinery and minimal metal hardware. The timber surfaces carry a deep, natural patina formed through decades of handling, while the survival of the original wheel, flyer, bobbin assembly, and accompanying wool working tools confirms sustained functional use. Read as a complete example of nineteenth century domestic equipment, it holds the quiet authority of an object made to work daily and endure.
