An exceptionally tactile Chinese travel chest constructed from substantial bamboo ribs and tightly woven panels. The gently arched structure, darkened surface and simple iron hardware give it a compelling balance of geometry and texture.

Dating broadly to the late nineteenth or early twentieth century, the chest has hand painted characters, ring handles and a practical front latch. The marks and patina reflect its age, while the woven construction makes it a distinctive occasional storage piece.
