French Louis XV style commodes of the early twentieth century continued the tradition of finely figured veneers, floral marquetry and gilt bronze mounts, bringing eighteenth century cabinetmaking into homes with enduring craftsmanship and proportion. This example features a shaped black marble top above three drawers with intricate marquetry panels, ormolu mounts and cabriole legs. Pieces with this level of decorative detail rarely remain available for long because they work as comfortably beneath contemporary art as they do within traditional interiors.
