A large scale engraved brass charger designed to be read visually from across a room.
Produced in China in the late Qing to early Republic period, this charger centres on a Confucian teaching scene, framed by dragons, phoenixes, cloud scrolls, and auspicious character medallions associated with fortune and longevity. The depth of the engraving and the disciplined symmetry point to workshop production for merchant homes or family halls, where pieces like this were displayed vertically as markers of learning, prosperity, and cultural continuity. At 60 cm in diameter, this was never a table plate but a decorative object made to operate architecturally on a wall, carrying narrative, symbolism, and material weight.
