Produced in Italy in the late twentieth century, this dining setting brings together a tubular steel table base with a smoked glass top, its softened rectangular form and rounded ends characteristic of the period’s move toward lighter, more open structures. Continuous black tubing gives the table its architecture, while the four accompanying chairs introduce woven rattan against the harder lines of the steel and glass. Three chairs are Italian made, with a closely matched Australian made fourth completing the set. The cantilevered forms carry the unmistakable influence of Marcel Breuer and the Cesca tradition without becoming an exercise in imitation. Smoke, black steel and natural rattan should compete for attention. Instead, the contrast is what holds the whole setting together.
