Japanese Meiji Export Carved Hongmu Library or Writing Table Circa 1900
Japanese Meiji Export Carved Hongmu Library or Writing Table Circa 1900
A Japanese Meiji export library or writing table, circa 1900, with an exceptionally elaborate carved hardwood frame and a rich reddish brown finish. The restrained rectangular writing surface sits above an exuberant arrangement of deeply cut floral foliage and scrolling forms, creating a striking contrast between the simplicity of the top and the expressive movement below.
Bold cabriole legs sweep outwards and curl into scroll feet, while flowers, leaves and interlaced stems travel across the open carved aprons and down the supports. The shaped tabletop has a continuous Greek key border with floral detail at the corners, bringing a crisp geometric rhythm to the more organic carving beneath.
Concealed drawers open from opposing sides of the table, preserving the continuity of the carved elevations. At 112cm wide, the piece has enough presence to stand independently in a room, equally compelling as a writing table, library table or decorative centre table.
Photographed with a chair to demonstrate scale. The chair is not included.
Measures: 112cm W x 83cm D x 76cm H
Conditioned for presence and atmosphere with age appropriate wear. Excellent overall antique condition, with visible scratches, rubbing and wear to the finish of the work surface consistent with its age and previous use.
