Italian sculptor Odo Franceschi trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where he later taught, and produced public works across Italy, Pakistan, and Canada before his death in Florence in 1958. Carved circa 1920, this reclining female figure in white marble sits on a veined granite plinth, signed by the artist, the form languid and classical in its resolution. The carving is assured without being decorative, the surface worked to a finish that reads differently depending on the light. It belongs in a room where the other decisions have already been made.
