Pair of Rococo Revival Shell Grotto Chairs 20th Century
Shell grotto furniture traces its origins to the garden follies and ornamental interiors of 18th century Europe, where shells, coral and marine forms became part of the theatrical language of Rococo design. This pair is a 20th century interpretation of that tradition, formed in composite and fibreglass with enormous scalloped shell bodies carried on three ridged and curling supports recalling coral and marine life. Their exaggerated scale and unapologetically fantastical form sit somewhere between furniture, architecture and object. Left with their naturally developed patina, the grey and white surfaces retain the tonal variation and evidence of age that restoration would erase. Examples from the larger grotto suite have previously sold through Christie's and been featured in The Times. One is strange. A pair becomes an environment.
