Rococo Revival Shell Grotto Three Seat Lounge
Rococo Revival Shell Grotto Three Seat Lounge
Shell grotto furniture traces its origins to the garden follies and ornamental interiors of 18th century Europe, where shells, coral and marine forms became part of the theatrical language of Rococo design. This 20th century three seat lounge takes that tradition to an extraordinary scale, formed in composite and fibreglass as a vast scalloped shell carried on oversized shell form supports. The deeply ribbed exterior retains its naturally developed grey patina while the interior opens into luminous white, creating an object that changes completely depending on the viewing angle. Examples from the larger grotto suite have previously sold through Christie's and been featured in The Times. At more than two metres wide, this has moved well beyond novelty furniture. It effectively installs a piece of fantasy architecture into the room.
