2 Circle Lounge Chairs 1970s by Yngve Ekström for Swedese Stained Beech and Red Leather Upholstery
Designed by Yngve Ekström and produced by Swedese in Sweden during the 1970s, these Circle chairs demonstrate the Swedish approach to lightness through repetition, where the structure is resolved through evenly spaced spindles rather than solid mass. The circular stained beech frame wraps continuously around the sitter, forming an integrated arm profile, with the backrest and seat pads introduced as precise interruptions to the timber rhythm. Ekström’s work consistently balanced domestic comfort with disciplined construction, and here the geometry remains legible from every angle, with the red upholstery providing a controlled contrast against the dark frame. These get specified in projects where a single pair needs to carry the visual weight of an entire seating zone without relying on a sofa. Placed opposite a low table or pulled slightly off a wall, they set the structure of the room through outline alone, with the red acting as a fixed point that everything else can move around.
