Wallace Furniture Dining Table Australia, Circa 1980s Aged Brass, Timber Stretcher Smoked Glass
Wallace Furniture produced some of the most architecturally ambitious dining tables in Australia during the 1980s, working in brass, timber and glass at a scale and material weight that positioned them firmly within the international design language of the period. This table carries a base of closely spaced vertical brass bar stock, curved into two portal legs and joined by a solid timber stretcher, the brass now aged to a warm antique tone that sits between gold and bronze depending on the light, a patina that develops over decades and cannot be purchased new. The smoked glass top carries one small chip to the edge, barely perceptible in use, and floats above the frame with no visual interruption, its rounded rectangular form generous enough to seat eight with ease. A designer specifying this table is not choosing brass and smoked glass as a trend, they are choosing a resolved object that already knows what room it belongs in.
